Everyone needs to eat and drink. And we need to do it several times a day. So whether you are one who would love to keep making your favorite recipes, one who enjoys trying out new dishes, or one who just wants to pour their coffee without spilling, you can benefit from low vision cooking aids.

Liquid Indicator

One of the handiest kitchen gadgets for pouring yourself a cup of coffee, tea, water or juice is a liquid indicator. It rests on the edge of the glass or cup and when the liquid is near the top a beeping sound is made. You can also make it easier to see your liquids if you make the most of contrasting your colors. Pour your dark coffee in a white mug or pour your white milk in a black or navy blue glass.

Large Number Measuring Spoons and Cups

Whether you are trying to bake or simply add a ¼ teaspoon of salt to your vegetables, use measuring spoons and cups that have large, bold numbers that are easy to see. Again it is helpful to utilize contrast. Use black measuring spoons to measure white salt, baking powder or baking soda.

Large Print Cookbooks

Large print cookbooks are available but the variety is very limited. If you enjoy reading new books on healthy eating that include good recipes, like my favorite, The Book of Kale, get a colored e-book reader. E-readers like the Kindle Fire, the Apple iPad or Barnes and Noble colored Nook are great for books with lots of pictures. You can enjoy the beautiful colored images and appreciate the ability to enlarge the font and enhance the contrast for easy reading.

Large Number Timer

The electronic digital timers on ovens are often hard to see and can be even harder to set. A large number timer with big bold numbers is so easy to see. Simply move the indicator by winding it to the set time. You don’t need to overcook or undercook your food with this handy kitchen gadget.

Cutting Board

Keep eating those healthy salads, and fresh fruits and vegetables. They are much healthier for you than canned ones. Use what is called a low vision cutting board that is white on one side and black on the other. Again it is using contrast to enhance your useable vision. Cut your dark green peppers on the white side and your white onions using the black side.

Being in the kitchen can be lots more enjoyable and less frustrating by simply investing in a few handy kitchen aids.
